July 17-19 | Veninga Theater, Wausau
Just a small-town girl, a city boy and the biggest rock anthems (and hair) of the 1980s are coming to Wausau this week, as Wausau Community Theatre stages a high-energy production of the Tony award nominated musical “Rock of Ages.” This show features the hits of 1980s biggest acts, including Journey, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and more. Set during the tail end of the 1980s in Hollywood, aspiring rock star Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Sunset Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip before it’s too late? “Rock of Ages” plays July 17-18 and July 23-25 at 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. Sunday matinees on July 19 and 26, at the Veninga Theater in Wausau. Tickets range from $12 for kids to $27 for adults and can be purchased at wausaucommunitytheatre.org.
